Back to the river

A Casola-in-Lunigiana circular via Vigneta

Starting and finishing in the medieval town of Casola-in-Lunigiana, this predominantly woodland walk follows a good foresters’ track high above the Aulella river to the village of Vigneta. The route back follows an ancient road to the east of the river through gentler mixed woodland and olive groves. The final section of the outward journey to Vigneta uses the old road from Reusa and crosses a tributary of the river on an idyllic medieval bridge. A second medieval bridge is crossed on the way out of Vigneta but, sadly, the parapets were removed at some point to allow local farmers access by tractor. All in all, a delightful walk on good tracks and paths.

One of the many benefits of being retired is that I get to spend so much more time in the great outdoors, not only as a photographer but in exercising one of my other great passions — hill walking. This is a particularly good fit when one’s photography centres around nature and the landscape. There can be few better places to do that than here in the beautiful mountains of Tuscany.
