Bridge over the Tassonaro

A circular walk from Casola-in-Lunigiana via Codiponte and Luscignano

This is a walk of three distinct flavours, punctuated by three villages, each very different in character. The start and finish point is the village that gives this comune its name — Casola-in-Lunigiana. Other than a stone tower and a short section of the old town wall with a gate, there is little of its original medieval fortifications left. Near the start of our walk, you will cross the beautiful Tassonaro river by a new suspension bridge. This first  part of the route has a predominantly woodland flavour and leads to the second village, Codiponte, locally famed for its romanesque church, apple orchards and annual apple festival. It, too, has the remains of a castle and a beautiful medieval bridge that has recently been restored. A fairly gentle uphill section of flower-rich olive groves then brings us up to the very pretty hilltop village of Luscignano. From here, a quiet lane winds its way back down to the start and finish point.

One of the many benefits of being retired is that I get to spend so much more time in the great outdoors, not only as a photographer but in exercising one of my other great passions — hill walking. This is a particularly good fit when one’s photography centres around nature and the landscape. There can be few better places to do that than here in the beautiful mountains of Tuscany.
