“Art is not about doing what’s been done before. It’s about pushing the boundaries. If we try to confine art by sentencing it to rules then we’re in danger of turning it into a science, which misses the whole point — art is one of humanity’s greatest expressions of freedom.”

Nigel Fawcett, 2019

A few words about angellightphoto

angellightphoto (originally angellightphotography.co.uk) is a brand that I created to support my online activities as a freelance photographer, back when the whole internet thing kicked off. It’s a name and a brand that I feel attached to, which is why I’ve hung on to it even after retiring.

More recently, I began to using the fuller title of the angellightphoto studio as a synonym for the brand because it affords me greater latitude when it comes to defining the nature of the content that I can embed within these pages. You may already have noticed the introduction of a whole new section of my site that is dedicated to walking.

Photography has been an important part of my life for almost as long as I can remember. And walking? For even longer!

I am passionate about the use of photography as an expression of fine art. It is as art that the philosophical elements of a photograph stand out and grant it the power to illuminate, challenge and question the world we live in. Hopefully, these values are reflected in the nature and quality of the images and words you’ll find on these pages.

Landscape photography and walking have a bit of the chicken and egg about them — do we walk to get to the places where we want to take photos, or do we take photos as part of the motivation for walking? The reality is probably a bit of both with its roots in whether we started off as walkers or photographers. Either way, they complement each other perfectly so let’s go for a walk …

Nigel was born on 18 October 1955 in Leigh-on-Sea, England. After finishing Grammar School in Southend-on-Sea, he studied Landscape and Design in Amenity Horticulture, which wedded his interests in photography, artistic design and the landscape. After starting his first job in garden retail, he rapidly moved into the world of business. Following thirty-one years as a freelance photographer, technology specialist, director and part owner of one of the United Kingdom’s best known High Street brands, 2007 saw him take early retirement and relocation to Tuscany, Italy where he is able to spend more time on his life-long passions of walking and photography.

Nigel met his artist wife, Elena, in Crimea in 2009 and they were married in 2010 at the parish church in Prittlewell, England where he grew up.

Nigel’s home sits between the Apennine and Apuane mountains, near Fivizzano, where he finds the Tuscan climate and the Lunigiana landscape the perfect environment in which to pursue his predilection for landscape and nature photography.

One of the many benefits of being retired is that I get to spend so much more time in the great outdoors, not only as a photographer but in exercising one of my other great passions — hill walking. This is a particularly good fit when one’s photography centres around nature and the landscape. There can be few better places to do that than here in the beautiful mountains of Tuscany.
