Verrucola is a historic village in the municipality of Fivizzano and is located on high ground between the Mommio and Collegnano streams. Its imposing castle, il Castello Bosi Verrucola, is testament to the fact that there was a time in the Middle Ages when Verrucola was more important than Fivizzano but influence from Florence saw Fivizzano grow in both political and mercantile importance. A massive earthquake in 1481 impoverished the area, resulting in the final decline of Verrucola’s importance.
